SIGNS OF THE TIMES California
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
The photographers of this exhibit all met online through a shared passion: vintage signs. Using their artistry as photographers and creativity as image editors, they strive to bring appreciation to something that is fast disappearing from our American landscape. Too rapidly these beautiful hand crafted creations are being torn down in favor of cheap plastic or mass-produced LED signage that is further pushing our society toward complete homogenization.
These photographers, who have dubbed themselves Sign Geeks, plan photo trips to regions still rich in vintage signage. They have shot in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Reno, Los Angeles and Bakersfield. Individually, they have traveled far and wide to capture signs of bowling alleys, motels, bars, coffee shops and liquor stores. These signs tell us stories if we're willing to listen.
They speak to us of a simpler time. A time when motel owners could lure weary motorists with the promise of TV in rooms, tubs and showers, air-cooled or steam heated. They are time capsules we drive past every day. But these photographers stop. Because they know that little neon gem might not be there the next time they drive by. Because they want to share this forgotten bit of history with the world. Because the sign itself is a work of art and should be appreciated as such. Our show here highlights their work in the state of California. Since California is credited with being the first state in America to use neon signs, it seems appropriate for us to begin our sign journey here. Enjoy the road trip!
